Gospel

From our childhood we are all familiar with the story in today’s gospel.  St luke is again returning to the themes of Gods inclusive lone mercy and salvation.  This story is all about exclusion,  mercy thanksgiving and faith.  All themes that are as relevant today as they were in the time of Jesus.

Jesus was greeted by ten lepers” they stood some way off.  They were compelled to cry out unclean.  They were pushed to the margins of society.  They were worthless human beings and whats more they were contagious.

They called out saying “Jesus Master have mercy on us.  Kiernan O’ Mahony OSA in his commentery on this gospel gives us pointers for prayer.  I would like to share this with you.

  • The cure of the lepers is not just a physical cure, it also brought people back from exclusion into the community.  Perhaps you have experienced the movement from exclusion to inclusion.   What it is like for you to be accepted once again when you have been excluded.
  • Who were the Jesus people for you who brought about this change.  For whom have you been able to do this, perhaps by healing  a rift with a friend, or by listening to the opinion of  someone you had dismissed out of hand.  Or by opening the door in some other way or another.
  • Some people work hard at breaking down barriers in society, seeking inclusion for those who find themselves labelled as lepers by society. Let us pray that all people are equal in society as they are in the eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ.
