Pope Francis at General Audience 12 June 2019

The Resurrection of Christ is the source of the new life.   The disciples know it and they remain united, in agreement and in prayer.   They stay close to Mary, the Mother, and they prepare to receive the power of God, consolidating the communion among them.”

The number 12 represented the 12 tribes of Israel.   The first Christian community had 120 brothers and sisters.   Jesus chose 12 disciples.   But with the loss of Judas, this was reduced to 11.

Judas had received the great grace of being part of the group of 12 but then ceased to belong to Jesus with his heart.

St. Luke makes us see that in face of the abandonment of one of the 12, it’s necessary that his task pass to another.

“It’s necessary to reconstitute the group of Twelve.   Community discernment begins.

Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias were the two candidates for the 12th spot.  The community prayed, discerned, voted and chose Matthias.

Prayer for those sitting examinations

O Great St. Joseph of Cupertino who while on earth did obtain from God the grace to be asked at your examination only the questions you knew, obtain for me a like favour in the examinations for which I am now preparing.

In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked.   Through Christ our Lord.

St. Joseph of Cupertino, Pray for us.   Amen.
